Skiing January 26 & 27, 2002

Well, it was totally epic. The deepest driest powder I've ever experienced in the Cascades. Unfortunately the pictures didn't come out that well. The movies came out worse. Too busy enjoying the snow I guess.

Matt on our first run.

Saturday was spent yo-yoing a beautiful gladed slope. The first run got a little slow partway down when the terrain mellowed - the sun was out, and despite the cool temperatures, it was beginning to have its way with the snow.

Ed's dog Zack was having a bit of trouble on the ascent.

Luckily, it clouded over soon after, and the next two runs were faster, with face shots every turn.

The top of my hat, my left hand, and my right arm and ski pole.

We descended a west-facing slope for the way out, and it was equally sweet. The snow was beautiful, soft, dry, deep.

Andrew and Greg on the approach on day 2

On Sunday, three of us came back for more, and made better time up to the open slopes, due to the previous day's skin track. We chose a different aspect. A snow pit revealed mixed results - some definite layers, but no easy clean shears. We played it safe, but still managed to safely ski slopes up to 40 degrees . We took three 1000ft runs of perfect deep powder. A snorkel would have been useful, for I probably got more face shots than the rest of my life combined.
